The Artist

Hello! I'm Lindsay the face behind the artworks from Lindsay Oliphant Art.

To give you a little background information, here is a brief introduction into my creative journey.

Ever since I was a young girl I've had a passion for painting. Growing up I was always encouraged by my parents to pursue whatever interests I took enjoyment from, and was fortunate enough to be provided with a steady supply of arts and crafts materials. However, it wasn't until my dad gave me a professional watercolour palette that far exceeded the quality of the children's paints I was used to, that I really took a more keen interest in art. We sat in the garden together for hours and he taught me how to use watercolours properly.  I learnt about the paints themselves and how they behave, different painting techniques, and how to view the subject matter accurately. My skills developed from this point onwards, and from my teenage years up to present day I have enjoyed taking additional creative classes to explore a variety of mediums and expand my experience in as many different areas as possible. From life drawing to screen printing, papercutting or fine art I take great enjoyment from experimenting and continue to do so, hoping that my style will continuously evolve over time. All of these experiences combined have ultimately influenced how I have developed a love with art, and fuelled a passion that would eventually shape the trajectory of my adult life and career.

For 15 years I have been a commercial artist and print designer working in the fashion and interiors industry. 5 years ago I decided to start working on my own art separate to the commercial world of design. This gave me a chance to freely express myself, find my own personal style, and redefine what creativity looked like in my daily life.

My style is primarily inspired by abstract forms, which is why I predominantly use alcohol inks as my chosen medium. Alcohol inks create really organic and interesting abstract structures, and whilst they have their challenges through the creating process the results are well worth the effort.

Alongside abstracts themselves, I also draw a lot of influence from my beautiful surroundings here in the Lake District. Combining my love of landscapes alongside my painting style has allowed me to explore the natural world in a really organic and free way. This results in more exaggerated structures, textures, colours and details that whilst they celebrate our beautiful countryside it also allows the viewer to form their own connection and interpretation of the piece. One of the greatest feelings is to hear the feedback from my clients about how they view the artwork, how they connect with it and what it means to them. We all see the world differently but to be able to produce something that resonates with another person is a pure joy and something that I don't take for granted.

So why am I so passionate about abstract art? Well,.... it doesn't just offer up a subject matter to be instantly figured out. Its sole purpose is to evoke feeling to the viewer, a truly personal experience for them. It doesn't matter what my intentions were for the piece or where I drew inspiration, at that point all that matters is how the viewer connects to it. Whether through colour, composition, movement or texture the aim of my work is to create something that makes the viewer feel a certain way. Soft fading colours and delicate forms can enhance a calming space within your home, or maybe a bold powerful piece packed with striking contrasts and exciting details can bring some much needed drama to an empty wall. At my core is a love to create and abstract art provides me the freedom to get completely lost in the process and trust the evolution of a piece. Whether I'm working on ready-to-buy artworks or a specific commission brief, my number one aim is to produce good quality work and a positive customer experience.

Over the past few years I have also pulled my obsession for interior design into my work and I'm now able to offer unique handpainted homewares and gifts that bring mini works of art to the rest of your home. A perfect marriage of function and beauty!
